Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU)

The Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) is where patients who require very close observation are admitted. Patients may be extremely unwell due to an acute illness or they may have suffered serious and life-threatening injuries in an accident. Other patients may include those who have recently undergone major surgery, may need constant attention or special drugs which assist their heart and circulation.

The ITU has state of the art monitoring and life-support equipment so that normal body functions can be observed and supported whilst the patient is unwell.

The ITU is run by consultant anesthetists who are specially trained in dealing with very sick patients and the problems they have. Working alongside them is a team of nurses who are experienced in caring for extremely unwell patients and looking after the complex monitoring and life support equipment.
